MET students cook up a storm for sector

28th January 2015

Hospitality students from Belfast Metropolitan College impressed local sector leaders at two recent showcase evenings.

James Street South’s apprentice chefs presented a five-course menu, which was served to the eaterie’s owner Niall McKenna along with members of the public in the college’s Linen Lounge restaurant. The apprentices, aged between 16 and 24, started their training in September and this event formed part of their industrial training to complete an NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery.

On a second evening, students completing an Advanced Diploma in Professional Cookery or a Foundation Degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management created, prepared and served a special menu to a prestigious audience of industry decision makers.

Kevin Lavery, head of school for creative and service industries, said: “Belfast Met is dedicated to playing an important role in providing the talent to fill future jobs in Northern Ireland.

“The aim of the showcase evenings was to demonstrate the talent of our trainee chefs and to further build relationships that enable skills development through industry placements, career talks and job opportunities.”
