GET OFF TO A GOOD START WITH SALARY

Understandably, many people find discussing salaries uncomfortable during an interview.

But most interviewers expect some bartering and, if it motivates you to put more into the job, it’s worthwhile for both the applicant and the employer.

Tips for negotiating the best starting salary:

KNOW YOUR VALUE

Prior to interview, research the company you’re applying for and the salary range for the position you’re applying for.

SAY AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE

An interviewer will want to discuss salary as early as possible so they don’t waste time with someone they can’t afford.

They may dwell on past salary to keep your expectations low.

You need to delay talk of salary until you convince them you’re the person they need, so avoid discussing salary until you have a job offer.

If pressed by interviewers about desired salary, try saying ‘I’d like to make as much as other employees with my qualifications’ or ‘what’s the typical salary for this position?’

SELL YOUR SKILLS

Be prepared to talk about skills and accomplishments that support the value you consider yourself to have.

ESTABLISH YOUR TARGET SALARY BOTTOM LINE

Before you go into an interview, decide what salary you want and what you’ll settle for.

It should be noticeably higher than what you earn now.

Your target salary should be 10–15% higher than the minimum you’d accept as this gives you margin for negotiation.

If you do get the offer get it in writing, ensuring it’s signed!
