NORTHERN Ireland should be a vanguard in developing management and leadership skills fit for 21st century challenges, according to Employment and Learning Minister, Dr Stephen Farry.
He was speaking at the recent launch of the enhanced Management and Leadership Development Programme (MLDP).
The Department’s MLDP is a suite of individual training interventions and courses aimed at developing leadership and management competency in Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SME’s) and Social Economy Enterprises.
Encouraging SME’s to embrace management and leadership training, the Minister said: “I am very aware of the need for Northern Ireland companies to nurture their managers and leaders. My department’s Skills Strategy spells out the ambition for Northern Ireland to be a leader in developing and deploying management and leadership capabilities fit for 21st Century challenges.
“As improved management and leadership skills are proven worldwide to be a highly effective way for companies to gain competitive edge, it is vital that Northern Ireland SME’s invest now in order to support our local economy.”
There are 23 initiatives offered through the MLDP Programme including the management skills training course entitled Lead Like an Owner.
The Minister concluded: “Through my Department’s enhanced and updated MLDP programme I am keen to encourage businesses to see and experience the real benefits of investing in relevant and meaningful leadership and management training. The Lead Like an Owner programme will make a valuable contribution to developing the skills of senior managers.”
MLDP currently attracts 50% funding, to a maximum of £1,500 per individual manager with an upper annual threshold of £7,000 per company.
The launch took place as the first cohort of the year commences the Lead Like an Owner senior management initiative, one of 23 initiatives offered through the MLDP programme.
Daniel Orr, general manager of Antrim based training company Linkubator which is delivering the Lead Like an Owner initiative, said: “We look forward to supporting business leaders as they take steps to grow and develop their business and staff.”
MLDP is delivered through a variety of channels including teaching workshops, coaching and online training materials.
