Firm Extols Benefits Of Apprenticeships

17th September 2013

An electrical company which has trained 157 engineers down the years has spoken of the benefits to employers of the apprenticeships scheme.

Bryan Campbell, director at Blackbourne Integrated M&A in Antrim said apprenticeships could help companies in a range of ways, including lowering overall training and recruitment costs.

“These are extremely difficult times for young people trying to make their way in the job market, so it is great to offer them the opportunity to get real practical experience within the electrical contracting industry while also studying,” he said.

“Blackbourne are fully supportive of apprenticeships as they play a vital role in the future of our trade. Indeed, I served my apprenticeship with this company and have been with the here ever since.”

Mr Campbell outlined the benefits to companies of apprenticeships:

They:

Help secure a supply of skilled young recruits that can go on to become future managers – which is the case for the majority of contract managers at Blackbourne
Ensure staff are equipped with the practical skills and qualifications they need
Deliver skills that match company needs and help develop the specialist skills needed to keep up-to-date with the latest technology and working practices
Demonstrate commitment in supporting the local community

“The on-going stability of Blackbourne is based upon our high quality workforce and our commitment to staff development,” continued Mr Campbell.

“We currently have a number of apprentices in training at various stages.  This clearly demonstrates our commitment to progression planning, ensuring that Blackbourne has new generation staff as apprentices help build the workforce of the future.”

Jonathan Deakin, electrical apprentice at Blackbourne explained: “From the moment I discovered what the trade was all about I knew this is what I wanted to do.”

Another of this year’s four apprentices, Philip Kitson, added: “I am delighted to have joined one of Northern Ireland’s leading electrical company’s. I am really looking forward to doing the practical work and getting stuck in – it is such a great opportunity”.
