Career advice ‘vital to future of economy’

17th September 2013
CAREERS choices are crucial for job growth and the future of the Northern Ireland economy.
That was the message at the West Belfast Business Education Partnership (BEPs) Careers Convention attended by almost 1,350 local post-primary school pupils.
Education Minister, John O’Dowd commended the event for allowing local students to meet and speak directly with employers and higher and further education institutions and training organisations:

“Choosing a career path can be a difficult choice, it is therefore essential that our young people know what is available to them and are provided with sufficient help and support to aid their decision-making process.”
The Department of Education funded BEPs enables local teachers to develop and deliver employability and enterprise projects to meet the specific needs of their pupils in the local community.
Continuing the Minister said: “A well-educated and highly skilled workforce is crucial to our future economy. With job growth coming from different occupations and in different areas, there is a need for new skills and the need to build on existing skills. Careers Conventions give young people an insight into what the needs of business are and how they the student can help fulfil those needs.”
In conclusion, the Minister commented on the important role the Entitlement Framework will play in ensuring that young people have access to a wider range of courses. He said: “From September this year, young people have the legal right to access a wider range of courses that will help equip them with the skills and qualifications they need.”
Meanwhile, a multi-million pound expansion plan will create 84 new jobs in Tyrone.
The £3.4 million expansion at the Dungannon company, EDGE Innovate will create a range of positions from skilled shop floor operatives to design engineers and sales and marketing personnel.
EDGE Innovate is a global leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of a range of equipment used in the recycling, materials handling and quarrying industries.
Invest NI has offered EDGE Innovate £421,500 of support, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, towards capital investment and marketing activities.
Announcing the investment Enterprise Minister, Arlene Foster said:
“EDGE Innovate operates within an important industry for Northern Ireland and its investment not only adds to County Tyrone’s international standing in the Materials Handling sector but will provide skilled jobs across a range of positions in this rural area.”
