HOW TO… GET A PROMOTION
DON’T BE AFRAID TO PUT YOURSELF FORWARD
WITH job security at the forefront of everyone’s minds more and more people are opting to move up the career ladder internally. Likewise companies are keen to retain and nurture talent. But how do you go about securing that promotion?
HINTS AND TIPS
-Know your goal; visualise what it is you want to achieve and then consider the steps you need to take to get there.
-Be realistic; is your employer in a financial position to offer a promotion, are there other people ahead of you and do you have the necessary skills.
-Seek feedback; ask your boss for a performance review, assess your own strengths and weaknesses and be prepared to learn new skills.
-Be available; without being exploited be prepared to go over and beyond the call of duty, do the jobs that others won’t.
-Think ahead; anticipate your boss’ needs. Asking for more responsibilities will show a commitment to your job and the company.
-Look the part; dress to impress, be punctual and try to help others.
-Be honest; there is nothing wrong with being ambitious so don’t be afraid to ask your boss what would qualify you for a payrise or promotion.
Lastly, while more money may be at the forefront of your mind, it is best not to discuss figures until you are actually offered the promotion.
