Deputy Editor, Belfast Telegraph

Independent News & Media (INM), Ireland's leading news publisher, is seeking applications for the role of Deputy Editor, Belfast Telegraph. Reporting to the Editor the role holder assists in commissioning and producing quality content to maintain and grow Belfast Telegraph's audience in Northern Ireland's competitive newspaper market. This position is responsible for applying the overall tone of the Belfast Telegraph as directed by the Editor.

The Deputy Editor will work collaboratively with other senior executives associated with Belfast Telegraph and liaise closely with key functions across the Group; such as News, Politics, Sport, Digital and Production.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Drive the content of the Belfast Telegraph from both a print and digital perspective.
  • Work in conjunction with the Editor to devise campaigns and initiatives to boost circulation.
  • Assume Editorial responsibility in the absence of the Editor.
  • Ensure the implementation of appropriate editorial rosters.
  • Devise promotional strategies for the Belfast Telegraph in conjunction with other departments.
  • Ensure staff training keeps apace with new technology.
  • Play a leading role in the development of talent and the appointment of new staff.
  • Drive the highest quality standards of published content.
  • Ensure published content is free of legal liability.
  • Liaise with Group functions, other back desk editorial colleagues and the production team on the selection and display of content.
  • Ensure production deadlines are met.
  • Manage editorial resource including budgets.

Experience, Skills and Qualifications:

  • At least five years' experience as a senior media professional, with a recognised and demonstrated standard of excellence in national newspapers.
  • A strong background of leading and managing a team of journalists.
  • An excellent knowledge of media law, defamation, copyright and data protection.
