About the job

Assistant Curator – Hillsborough Castle

Northern Ireland

12-month fixed-term contract

Historic Royal Palaces looks after some of the most iconic sites in the UK today including Hampton Court, the Tower of London, Kensington Palace the Banqueting House, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle. We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society in some of the greatest palaces ever built.

This is a 12 months fixed-term post, based at Hillsborough Castle (County Down) for an experienced curator with a specialization principally in historic buildings and an interest in British and Irish history. Hillsborough Castle is the official residence of HM The Queen, as well as the Secretary of State, in Northern Ireland and an important new heritage site for Historic Royal Palaces. The post holder will provide research support to the Curator as well as the wider Hillsborough team. This position presents an exciting opportunity for a knowledgeable, experienced, and talented individual.

You will support and advise the team on researching, understanding and sharing the stories of the Castle and its historic fabric. You will also help to champion an understanding of history in the presentation of the Castle and its estate today.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Providing buildings conservation advice to colleagues in line with Historic Royal Palaces’ conservation policies and legislation for listed buildings in Northern Ireland
  • Setting standards for the presentation and use of the Castle through producing Statements of Significance and the Conservation Plan
  • Writing, communicating and archiving research and reports on the Castle and its broad history from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century
  • Identifying requirements for essential buildings and archaeological recording; commissioning and supervising specialist consultants
  • Representing Historic Royal Palaces to the wider world and communicating its stories

The post is within the Hillsborough Castle operational team and will involve close cooperation with the Curator and specialist colleagues based in both Hillsborough and London, as well as external contacts.

You will have demonstrable experience of working in a heritage environment, and have particular expertise in historic buildings. You will have post-graduate qualifications in a relevant discipline such as architectural history, history, or archaeology. In addition, you will have an understanding of best practice in the field of buildings archaeology and archaeological recording, and an ability to read and understand architectural drawings.

Equally importantly, you will be a well-informed and enthusiastic communicator of history, able to reach a wide range of audiences. In-depth knowledge of the history of the modern period would be an advantage. You will also demonstrate proven ability to work flexibly within a busy project team, and be confident in persuading and negotiating to reach your objectives.
