Role Summary

The Belfast Telegraph is seeking to recruit a Sub-Editor, who will work as part of the multi-channel subbing team to edit and prepare our award-winning journalism for publication across our digital and print channels.

As a sub-editor you will curate, edit and enhance content for publication online and in print on a rostered basis across seven days a week.

The sub-editor will ensure the delivery of finished content, ready for publication, across, the Belfast Telegraph and Sunday Life to the required quality standards and work closely with the news desk and audience team to ensure content is digital ready at all times.

Role Responsibilities (Overview)

  • Editing articles for grammar, punctuation, clarity and accuracy
  • Writing compelling headlines that meet both SEO and UX demands
  • Fact checking and liaising with the writer where appropriate
  • Ensuring content is free from legal issues
  • Enhancing content for digital publication
  • Working to exacting deadlines
  • Comprehensive knowledge of house style
  • Understanding and upholding the style, standards and ethics of Mediahuis
  • Giving a final review to content under direction
  • Editing photos: pulling photos from image management applications, cropping photos for publication, verifying images
  • Working to meet specific individual goals as assigned

Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)

  • Two years of professional journalism experience as an editor or sub-editor – preferably with digital experience
  • Experience of a newsroom environment
  • Familiarity with digital CMS platforms is desirable as is a working knowledge of InDesign
  • A strong understanding of media law in Northern Ireland, especially defamation, privacy, copyright and data protection

  • Expert news judgment, editing skills, speed and accountability;
  • Demonstrably strong communication, copy-editing and print and digital production skills;
  • Demonstrating consistency at putting together coherent and cohesive headlines, sub-heads, standfirsts, and captions;
  • Ability to use online tools;
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Working in a collaborative and multidisciplinary way under exacting deadlines;
  • Composure - you will be required to make good decisions in a fast-paced environment;
  • Enthusiasm, adaptability and a high degree of integrity and personal responsibility;
  • A strong awareness of potential legal issues
