Company: Lucas Love Recruitment

Track Record:

What is your educational background?
I studied Law at Bournemouth University where I completed my LLB (Hons) Business Law and continued to the College of Law Guildford to do my LPC.

What was your very first job?

I was a lifeguard at Coral Reef!
My first real office job was as a Paralegal with British Gas which held me in good stead when I started my recruitment career with Michael Page as a legal recruitment consultant.

What made you decide to pursue your present career?

I knew life as a Solicitor was not for me but didn’t want to waste the knowledge I had gained during my studies.  It was actually a Solicitor who suggested recruitment to me and as they say the rest was history and I joined Michael Page (an international recruitment consultancy).

How long have you been in your current position?

I have been with Lucas Love Recruitment for 3 years. I joined the organisation to set up the Legal Desk; following the success of this, I am now a Director in the company.

Does your role offer ongoing training and development?

Lucas Love Recruitment encourages personal development and offers training and support to all staff. The company carries out in-house training and additional external training courses which are tailored to each employee.

What does a typical working day involve?

Recruitment is very diverse; so there is no such thing as a typical working day.  As a director at Lucas Love Recruitment, networking is a key part of my role and an area I enjoy very much.  On a daily basis I have to assess client and candidates needs and proactively work to ensure these needs are met and exceeded by the team.

What are your main responsibilities?

As a Director and head of the legal desk, I am responsible and accountable for everyone on the team and manage, train and develop all junior staff coupled with this I still enjoy actively recruiting for my clients and fulfilling their needs is my main priority.

What skills do you need?

There are a range of skills needed to be a good recruitment consultant.  You need to be able to multitask and react quickly in a highly competitive market.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I really enjoy the variety of work offered and the array of interesting people I meet; no day is the same as the next…

And the worst?

Trying to fit everything into each day!

What personal qualities does your job require?

A good recruitment consultant will have determination; adaptability and be a great communicator.

What advice would you give to someone wishing to pursue a similar career?

Recruitment is a sales job, you need to have a strong personality and be highly motivated.  It is a great career which offers a variety of development opportunities and is extremely rewarding.
