Tackling the skills gap

NORTHERN Ireland’s six regional colleges are the biggest providers of training and apprenticeships in Northern Ireland, and umbrella body Colleges NI says taking on an apprentice helps address the skills shortage by ensuring apprentices receive quality training.

Training is subsidised by the Department for Employment and Learning, which covers 100% of off-the-job training for under 24s and half of the costs for over 25s. 

Transport Training Services Ltd offers courses and apprenticeships for a career in the retail motor industry. 

It has a specially-designed training facility based at Nutts Corner, Co Antrim which includes motor vehicle workshops, a vehicle body repair and paint facility. 
Derry Youth and Community Workshop (DYCW) has a pool of trainees available for work placement in companies. DYCW has an excellent relationship with employers in the area and a large bank of employers available to trainees, who have to be contracted for 21 hours per week.

The Electrical Training Trust and college training network has managed the electrical apprenticeship since 1997. Since then over 2,000 electrical employees have completed the apprenticeship programme and are now practising qualified electricians.

An electrical apprenticeship within the construction industry offers a lifelong career in a challenging and interesting industry.  

North Down Training Ltd provides training and development opportunities for young people and adults in the Ards, Castlereagh and North Down Borough Council areas.

Apprentices have taken part in regional, national, and international skills competitions.
