Retail Management Training Programme Seeks Students

18th August 2014

THE Census 2011 Ireland and Northern Ireland revealed that the wholesale and retail sector employed the highest proportion of persons of all sectors north and south.

It stated that 18% of the NI workforce is employed in this sector, with the minister for Employment and Learning, Stephen Farry describing it as “one of the priority sectors of the economy”.

Earlier this year the Department of Employment and Learning announced the roll out of the successful WorldHost training to businesses in the retail sector.

This training for retail businesses will cover the key principles of customer service, from remembering names to communication and listening skills, with an additional focus on sales skills.

Minister Farry said: “The retail sector is extremely challenging and retailers need to train or upskill their staff to remain competitive.”

With this in mind now might be the time to consider a career in retail.

Opportunities such as the Henderson Retail Management Training Programme give school leavers the chance to launch their career in retail management.

Based in one of their stores across the Province, the three-year programme is designed to give real, hands-on experience with employees given responsibilities and expected to make their own decisions.

Through the initiative, the network of students will be involved in every area of the store operation and will receive on and off the job training and development workshops to nurture life and business skills.

Working full-time as a permanent employee, participants will receive a management training salary and be allocated a mentor for support and progression.

A spokesperson for Henderson said: “We will ensure you get involved with every area of the store operation. As you progress, you will learn how to lead and motivate the store team in all aspects of the business.

“This includes stock replenishment, food safety, customer service and even the set up of displays to help maximise and drive sales. Once you have successfully completed the programme, there will be opportunities for you to climb the management career ladder within our stores.”

Students will gain vocational qualifications in retail and team leading and have the chance to study for a foundation degree in retail. Visit http://w3rl.co/11qH9.
