Role: PE Teacher

Company: Cambridge House Grammar School

Track Record:

Give a brief outline of your career to date.

My first job was in Coleraine Academical Institute where I was employed as a PE teacher and rugby coach for two years on a temporary contract. Following this, I was fortunate to receive my current post at Cambridge House Grammar School where I am now boy’s PE teacher, Head of Rugby and Head of Year 11 boys.

What was your favourite subject at school?

My favourite subject at school was PE, I thoroughly enjoyed the physical activity and constant challenges to improve my own physical fitness as well as competing at the highest level in my chosen sports.

Did you go on to further/higher education, if so what did you study and where?

After completing my A-levels I went to Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education to complete a HND in Sport and Exercise Science. I then went to Stranmillis University College to complete my BSc Hon degree in Health and Leisure studies.

How did you get into your area of work?

I was always interested in becoming a teacher as my parents followed a similar pathway during their education. I enjoyed working with Mencap leisure camps during my summer holidays and felt that with playing so much sport, I would like to help educate and develop children in Physical Education.

Is this what you always wanted to do?

Yes 100%, I was always active in as much sport as possible in school and honestly didn’t consider any other career choice.

Were there any particular essential qualifications or experience needed?

It was essential that I completed my PGCE in Physical Education. I don’t believe you can gain enough experience. Personally I think getting into as many schools, clubs and organisations as possible is vital as you will learn different strategies for coping with all challenges our profession presents. I feel that if you acquire and develop your own CV it will provide a solid foundation and open more pathways during your career.

What are the main personal skills your job requires?

In teaching, I think having empathy with children is very important. Every child has a different background so they cannot all be judged under the same bracket. That is not to say school rules don’t apply to everyone. Sound communication skills are vital. It is important to talk and educate the pupils while keeping the lessons fun, active and challenging.

What are the best and most challenging aspects of the job?

The best part of my job is, most definitely, seeing a change and a development in my pupils as they mature. If the children are enjoying PE, and taking part in every lesson, then that is fantastic, not only for the pupil, but for the school. At Cambridge House we are striving to provide and cater for all our children in PE and Sport, the challenge is always to staff certain activities as there are so many popular sports out there to be catered for.

What advice would you give anyone looking to follow a similar career path?

Never give up on your goals. Keep learning from other professionals in your subject area and don’t be afraid to put yourself out of your comfort zone because you soon learn more about yourself with every new challenge.
