Judith Mulgrew

Senior Beauty Technician
Skin Medi Spa

Judith Mulgrew is a senior beauty technician in her own business, Skin Medi Spa.

What does your job entail?

I own my own business, Skin Medi Spa, so I have to carry out all the day to day tasks that are involved in running your own business and employing staff.  On top of all of this, which is a hectic 24/7 job in itself, I also carry out the work of a senior beauty technician in the clinic. This involves dealing with the public each day and carrying out beauty and cosmetic treatments on my own clients.

Is it 9-5?

No unfortunately not!  But I like being busy as I really enjoy what I do and the daily challenges it involves. I believe I have learned how to effectively manage my time well, from professional to private life, to cope with the dedication involved in running your own business.

How did you get into this line of work?

During my teenage years I suffered from very bad acne, because of this I became very interested in skincare. During my school days I had a Saturday job in a chemist specifically dealing with skincare and I enjoyed it so much I decided to pursue a career in the beauty field. To be able to help others in my job each day is an amazing thing and I truly can say I love my job and everything it entails.

Outline your career to date?

After training I worked from home for a while before moving to Canada, where I worked in one of the world’s leading spa hotel resorts in Baniff. I loved travelling, so I then applied to work for Virgin Atlantic as an in-flight beauty therapist for first class passengers. This was a fantastic opportunity to travel and see the world whilst still doing what I loved.

I always knew I wanted to come home eventually and when I returned to Belfast I got the opportunity to train with a very successful doctor in cosmetic procedures such as laser, chemical peels, tattoo removal, vein removal and IPL.

It was always my dream to have my own business and in April 2008 Skin Medi Spa opened its doors. Although it takes a lot of commitment and responsibility, I haven't looked back since.

Tell us about your qualifications/training

I trained at the Roberta Mechan College of Beauty and had a lot of training with Virgin Atlantic many moons ago. Throughout the years I have also trained with brands such as Clarins, Thalgo, Yonka, Guinot, Aveda and in specialist treatments such as Indian head massages and holistic treatments.

I have trained extensively too on all the treatments available in Skin Medi Spa as well as on treatments such as laser hair removal, laser lipo and laser teeth whitening.

What qualities are required for your job - personal and professional?

Good social skills are a must, I like to make sure my clients feel special when they come in for a treatment. I have a bubbly personality and I think this shines through within my work and also in how the business has progressed since we opened in 2008.

In a professional sense, you need a good work ethic, good motivation and 100% commitment to your business. I love my work and I think this is why my business has been such a success.

What is the best advice you ever received?

I have huge admiration for Sir Richard Branson, and I once read a quote from him that stuck with me through all the highs and lows of my business. He said: "For me business is not about wearing suits, or keeping stockholders pleased. It's about being true to yourself, your ideas and focusing on the essentials."

Personally, I really relate to this quote as I always have stayed focused on my goals and ideas, and building up my business to where it is today makes me feel not only very thankful, but also very proud of myself.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I don't get a lot of 'me' time with my work commitments, but when I do I like to relax with a good book. When I have the opportunity, I enjoy getting some treatments, but it is a really special treat when I am able to get a relaxing facial or a massage.

Who has inspired you most in your life?

My inspiration always has and always will be Sir Richard Branson. He suffered from dyslexia and left school but still made his first million by the age of 18. I had the opportunity to meet him when I worked for Virgin Atlantic and I couldn’t believe my luck. He is such a fantastic man, my idol and a true inspiration.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?

I love singing and I have been told on several occasions that I should have pursued it as a career. I have thought about auditioning for the X-Factor but I don’t think I could leave my business behind, even if it was for fame and fortune!
